Netflix Premier – Episode 3 – Vineyard Views

In 2014, my Dad and I were fortunate enough to film a real-estate tv show called What’s for Sale With a View.  Our friend and real estate agent Andy McDonald had been asked to be the host of the show and we saw it as a great opportunity to do some market research and compare our current property in the Santa Ynez Valley with some newly available properties in the area to decide if it was time to upgrade as we ramped up McKinney Family Vineyards wine production.

We filmed for two days straight with a 5 man film crew and by the end, we were totally exhausted!  However, we had an amazing time and got an in depth look at some stunning properties in our area.  The first property was a Frank Loyd Wright inspired estate in Ballard Canyon, the epicenter of many of the top Rhone Wines in the Santa Ynez Valley.  The home had a direct view of Michael Larner’s renowned “Larner Vineyard,” which produces some of the best Syrah, Grenache and Mouvedre in all of California.
The next home we toured was a Tuscan Villa in Happy Canyon, which was a stunning home and truly made one feel like they were in Italy.  Happy Canyon is the warmest climate region within the Santa Ynez Valley and known for amazing Bordeaux style wines- predominately Cabernet Sauvignon. This was a spectacular property with so much potential for an outstanding boutique winery.

The third property was a eye-catching 40 acre vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills, the award winning cool-climate region of Santa Barbara County and the Santa Ynez Valley.  Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive in this maritime climate and mineral rich soils. This property was a Pinot Noir winemaker’s dream but also had a substantial price tag at 6 Million USD.  The home on the property needed some serious work but it already had licensing for a tasting room which was a major bonus.

At the end of our journey, we concluded that if we were to sell our 10 acre property located a mile outside the town of Santa Ynez the best option would be to purchase the Tuscan Villa.

However, closing the deal for a TV show and actually buying a 3.9 million dollar property are two completely different things!  In the end, my Dad and I gained an unforgettable experience together filming this show. My family will have this footage forever and that, to us, is priceless. While tempted after the show to sell our current property, we simply couldn’t justify leaving the McKinney ranch behind. With 25 years of memories, we agreed to stay where the roots of our family and our vines began
